When I first heard this news my reaction was happiness as am aware of what Liu Xiaobo has done in terms of non violent human rights activities in China.
However the joy subsided and the wise but cynical monkey that I sometimes am started to contemplate the real reasons for this choice they are I believe as follows:
Not very peaceful - the US wants to invoke trade sanctions against China and is currently engaged in a subtle trade war
Economic - this will put pressure on China via a world stage to do something to look good such as ha ha raise the value of the RMB to benefit the american economy
In short:
ECONOMIC SPIN DOCTORING by the West to try and rescue ailing economies caused by spending too much money on wars around the world and not enough care /forsight to realize how this expensive "recreational pursuit" would impact on the economy back home.
I am pleased that someone has got recognition for what they have done for human rights and Liu Xiaobo has indeed contributed A LOT at great sacrifice to himself.
Simultaneously having lived in this over crowded country for nearly a year now politics aside I can see why China wants to keep the economy inside the country stable. I also can see why America doesn't want China's economy to remain stable as it is currently more powerful than theirs. The majority of the Chinese population are on a basic breadline and they are the ones who will suffer if the RMB goes up in value as the prices in China will be forced to rise.
Why do people always jump on the band wagon to benefit from the sacrifices made by others?
OK rant over
